Breast Implants: Their Size, Shape, and Texture

Today, there are many types of breast implants available on the market. Their differences can all be categorized according to the broad headings of shape, texture and size.

Shape of the Breast Implant

The shape of breast implants come in two general forms: round and contoured. While round is self explanatory, contoured breast implants are generally in the shape of a teardrop. This means that its shape is kind of like the letter “b”, in lower case, where the thickness gradually increases as it goes from top to bottom. Many women prefer this shape as it mimics the shape of an actual breast. On the other hand, other prefer the round implant, as it results in a fuller appearance.

Size of the Breast Implant

Size is one of the most important factors to consider for breast implants. Too small may make you wonder why you had undergone surgery in the first place, while too big could result in serious strain to your upper back and be a nuisance when performing daily activities. That's why it's important to examine your lifestyle, and determine what would be suitable according to those parameters.

Texture of the Breast Implant

Finally, we come to the texture of the shell of the breast implant. Whether saline or silicone filled, the shell is made out of a silicon elastomer that can be textured or smooth. Textured implants tend to be firmer and not shift around as much as smooth implants, since their textured surface can “cling” to their place. However, smooth implants do provide more of a natural feel.

In the end, it is up to you and your individual tastes to determine which type of breast implant is the best for you. Consultation with a cosmetic surgeon may also help you make the right decision.
